caedmon's and a clothed cat

I wrote another post yesterday that I have yet to add to the blog -- it's sitting in a Word document on our computer. I'll get around to posting that one soon. It just seems that it should come after this one, sequentially. It talks about one specific song on the new Caedmon's album, and I thought maybe I would post something more general about the new album first, as this release has been the topic of many discussions and much general excitement in our house over the past few months. :-) It just feels right to acknowledge it with some commentary.

I love it. The album, I mean. It's...it's....how to describe it....it's kind of all over the place. Sometimes Caedmon's has seemed to have "themes" to their albums over the past few years, (i.e. worship-centered albums, albums focusing on the global church, or whatever...). This one is just a little bit of everything that has ever been Caedmon's, I think. (Minus the category of "I'm so confused about my life" break-up songs that Derek contributed during dating relationships in his single years.) :-) Hey...they were great songs, though. Getting back on track -- one of the things that I love about Caedmon's is their ability to talk about hard things. They don't hesitate to touch on the subjects that would often be called "untouchable" in Christian music -- but they're also the things that all Christians deal with and think about, whether we admit it or not. For example, on this album, they have a song called Expectations that talks about the way we advertise the church today -- their example being the church billboards with pictures of smiling families on the interstate. And they pose the question, is this just another expensive ad for something cheap? Not exactly what would go over well in most churches today. But I love it, because these are some of the questions we should be asking ourselves as the church. It's a provocative question that really makes you think, and the communications major in me loves the fact that it talks about ads and the church. :-) That's just one song, though. The album is filled with songs of all varieties, and I would encourage you to check it out.

Anyway -- maybe Drew will grace us with some commentary later on, as well -- seeing as he is the musician of this household and often has more interesting things to say about these topics than I do.

In other news, our cat just came out of our bedroom wearing one of my shirts on his head. I expect these things from the dog, but the cat surprises me sometimes. I have no idea what to do with these animals...

I haven't checked out the new album yet but have heard some great things about it. I think I am going to try and conger up some money and buy the album. I could use another caedmon's CD to put on my ipod and listen to.
