So Suzy told me about two weeks ago she won't write another blog until I contribute something. Then she posted that last one... but I think now shes serious. I thought a blog was a good idea when we started it a couple months but quickly realized I'm as good at keeping up with blogging as I am with returning emails and phone calls. I have been really busy over the past couple months but then again, when am I not? SO today I'm breaking down and actually posting something. Nothing profound... just a little update I guess. I think Suzy has probably touch on somethings so sorry to bore you with stuff you might already know.
I got back off of block leave in early August only to learn I was being sent back to the National Training Center (Ft. Irwin, CA) for 3 weeks to be an Observer/Controller. This was the day after we learned we were headed back to Iraq three months earlier then we were expecting so another three weeks away from home (and only on a week's notice) was pretty upsetting. This now makes three trips to Ft. Irwin in the last six months. People tell me California is a beautiful state. And I want to believe them. But all I have seen of it is the Ft. Irwin/ Barstow/ Victorville areas which look like, well, a third world country in the middle east. Deserts can be pretty. The sunsets are nice. But that doesn't make up for the 115 degree days. Those definately bring down the appeal of an area.
I got back at the the beginning of September in time for Suzy's b-day (see last post) and got a couple weeks of "normalsy" before it was back to the field for another week. This time it was just at Ft. Carson but still another week away from home. This was the last field problem before we deploy so luckily I won't have to go away during my last couple months at home. The good thing about the couple months before deployment is that you get a lot more time off. People who usually don't care about wasting soldiers' family time suddenly start caring. Yesterday was a half day and next weekend is a 4-day weekend. So needless to say much time will be spent with the wife and puppy, most likely hiking around the mountains until it gets too cold. We're also planning on coming back to VA the end of October for about a week during my last block leave, so we're looking forward to seeing everyone!
Speaking of hiking, an area right next to Manitou Springs caught on fire yesterday and has been burning since. I think about 80 acres have been burned so far. No injuries or damage to buildings so far but the trails are probably another story. I tried to upload some pictures but it won't let me... so I'll try again in a later post. Well this has turned out to be a lot longer then I originally planned, and I gotta go get ready to play football in a little bit. Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!
